Cold Stares- HEAD BENT- Music Review (First Take)

The Cold StaresHEAD BENT– the title track of this disc included in the Monster Energy Yamaha Team Motorcross Video- thecoldstares.com – smallstone.com – “john” sounds like “Listen to the wind blow” to me. “Neighbor Blues” says “Don’t lay down with your neighbors wife”, which is good advice. At first I thought the advice was based on a moral conviction, turns out he’s just saying do it with someone else who lives on the other side of town. Harder to get caught. “Price to Pay” opens up like a late 80’s Motorhead song, but then when someone starts singing, you know its not Lemmy. I’m just disappointed but then I’d feel that way if anyone started singing. On “Stuck in a Rut” he says “stuck in a rut, must have lost my touch” and “Born under a bad sign on a rainy day”. Eleven songs are three too many. Not that the extra three songs, which ever ones they may be, are bad or don’t fit, it’s just that I always hope that bands will leave you wishing for more than over staying their welcome, and with eight or nine songs you hardly ever hit that point. What the Black Crowes would have sounded like if they hadn’t aped all of those 60’s soul and blues bands they loved so much. Cliches in the lyrics abound, such as “You take the right road, I’ll take the left . Meeting on the center line.” A plea for working together, natch. Oh wait, the last song is an obligatory noose around the neck song. Guess what? The guy was wrongfully hanged. Can you imagine. Be cool to hear about a person who was rightfully accused and hanged for his crimes, again and again.
