Among Giants – Back and Forth EP – Music Review

Among Giants – Back and Forth EP – Music Review Among Giants Back and Forth EP 7 Inch Record Jetsam-Flotsam let’s get this out of the way right off the bat, I like Among Giants, everything I have heard from them so far makes me a fan of their music. This EP is no exception. I like the production on this EP, hats off to Evan Blaine at World Champion Studios, got a nice heavy but not clunky punk rock sound. This can be tough to do, giving it some gravity but not over loading the bucket with too much cement. It’s a tough balancing act to get it to sound right and Evan did a nice job. What I have always liked about Among Giants, and this release has it in spades, is the crushing feeling you get from the lyrics, the lonely hapless guy who can’t get out his own way, who keeps finding his head in a bowl of soup ready to drowned cause another love has left his life. This release really shines the light on that and then drops out, leaving you wondering what happened and why it all went wrong. I like that, I don’t want the answers to all the questions or mistakes in life, I like feeling lost with things unanswered, That’s how life really works. Plus with lyrics like this “At twenty years old I thought I had things figured out. Now at twenty One, I laugh at my old self”. These lyrics may seem flip at first, making one think that this young punk has nothing figured out at 21 and may never. The listener knows more about life and it’s mistakes. That’s the give, the guy in the song knows it. He knows that he’ll probably understand very little even when he’s 51. He’s not being flip or coy, he’s really unhappy and realizes that it will never make sense. Among Giants have always been heavy and poppy at the same time. I would call them punk mostly because of the lyrical ideas in the songs, but their playing style reminds me a bit of birth place rock and roll. It’s catchy, real catchy but it has a bit of weightiness to it, more Weezer (without the lump in it’s throat) and Ramones than Alkaline Trio. I would like to see this band do well, because I like them. The very least that you can do is go to the Jetsam-Flotsam site and find out more about them...

SLTM (the Podcast) Episode 194 Music, Music and Fudge

I fell on my head as a baby, but that’s only half the story. You see, in my family it’s tradition, ever second child born of the first male who was conceived in the basement of a Winn Dixie has to be dropped every four years. So you see, I’ve seen a lot of shovels up close, long staircases and yes, even the occasional punch in the old fruit basket. It’s the driving force that makes me continue doing this project that no one is listening too. Partly. For the full story you’ll have to plunk down $7.99 for my new book, Born to Drink and Prance: My years with the Lawn Rangers. Available this Fall. Until then enjoy or most likely don’t, a new episode of SLTM (the Podcast). Somos- Live Interview plus Show Review

Somos Runaway Brother Live 6/9/2014 Firehouse Pizza and Pub Normal, IL There were two other bands on the bill, so I apolgize to them for not seeing them or remembering their names. I showed up after the start time and it seemed like they hadn’t started yet. So I heard the third band, and all of the Runaway Brother set and the complete Somos set. Now onto my thoughts about the show. I have never fit in perticularly well anywhere in life, not that I feel like an outsider, I don’t really, but I would enjoy it to much if I was an outsider. No, I always feel a bit awkward and out of place, and I thought that by the time I hit a mature age, somewhere past thirty, that I would feel less like this person. Nope, I guess this never goes away. The reason I bring this up is, I have a weird anxiety moment whenever I set up an interview with a band, be they younger bands like Somos or veterans like the Gaza Strippers. I feel anxious before the show, during the show and mostly while interviewing people. I force myself, well force might be a bit strong, I tell myself that I need to do this, that the anxiety will go away. It’s an irrational fear, and even though I have interviewed hundreds of people, it will never completely go away. So,here I was again driving from Champaign up to a really cool bar, one that books good young bands and indie acts regularly, to see and interview a band I had never met. Nervous? Not really, it’s more of an anxious feeling, like I’m going to say something completely off the wall, panic, feel my chest constrict, my breath shorten and then I run away in terror. It never happens, but that feeling is always there. The bands? For the most part couldn’t be cooler. Nicer, easy going people I don’t think you’ll find. They are always cool about sitting there, answering my stupid questions. Hell, the guys in Somos offered me a beer ( so did Bison when I interviewed them) and to put me on the guest list. There was only one time, and I think it was the Frames drummer, when someone couldn’t sit and answer my questions. That wasn’t because he was an asshole, he was just too cool to sit down and chat with me and the other...

MMOSS- Only Children- Music Review

MMOSS- Only Children- Music Review MMOSS Only Children Trouble in Mind Records mmoss.bandcamp.com troubleinmindrec.com I know if I put this release on my Dad’s computer (he was born in the late 1940’s) he would think it was 1968 again, and that gas prices were way to high at 49 cents. Of course, my dad thinks it still 1976 and Sammy Hagar has just released Nine On A Ten Scale and Jim Croce is still alive. Very trippy, but not space rock trippy kind of late 1960’s rock music with some Rock flute thrown down for a nice flavoring. There are only nine songs, but the disc seems last longer than that. That’s not a “Too long in the tooth” joke or criticism, it’s more about the vibe and feel you get out of listening to Only Children and not the over stay of the songs. Starts out trippy, head space kind of groovy and stays right there. Lots of good spacey keyboard and zoo zoo phone. Track Nine, , has some nice sitar and symbol drung to it, light evolving dreamy synth pop on a wave of open beams of light. Holy shit, what just happened to me? I just started to drift away there, floating on an effortless cloud of openhanded easiness, dreaming about flying in my beige cowboy hat and …holy shit, I did it again. Let me wait until this track and this album is over before I type again. (2 minutes later, after album ends and Brad has had a chance to get an ice tea and regain focus) Do you need psychedelic drugs, a lid of pot, or an appreciation of the Doors to listen to MMOSS? No. I’m sure all those things would enhance your vibe for the music. However, you don’t need to be into any of that, what you do have to be willing to do is sit back and just enjoy where this is taking you, don’t fight it, just relax and enjoy. There are a couple of long tracks, but most of the songs are only two to three minutes long. “Spoiled Son” is repeated at the end, not sure why that is, so there are only really eight songs. This band would be good to see live in a nice club with a light show, or some sort of background playing. Also this record would be good for those times when you and your mate just feel like turning all the lights out...
