<itunes:summary>This podcast, hosted by Fat Robot Radio's own Brad Bugos contains music and talk not heard on conventional radio. Why you ask? Well, it could be that most radio stations are too tied to profit and forgot the fun in sharing music with others. That's where SLTM (The Podcast) steps in, playing you music you won't hear most places along with some stupid chatter. It's good fun.</itunes:summary>

I once broke Tom Arrico’s CD over my friends head. Here’s how that adventure started…and ended.

Back at Lakeland College, Mattoon, IL, we would get lots of CD’s and Albums to listen to and play on the air at WLKL 90 FM. Not, a ton, but probably about 5 to 10 a month. I loved it, new music to sift through and enjoy. I took it upon myself to listen to everything that came through that door. Big mistake.

One day a CD came to the station from a guy named Tom Arrico. It was a self titled release. I took the time to look at the press photos and read the bio. It didn’t sound too appealing, but I never judged the music by how dumb the artist looked.

I asked my buddy Marc Hendral to listen to the CD with me, he enjoyed hearing new music as well. Let me tell you, it was worse than auditory rape. It was horrendous. Marc and I still listened to the whole CD, four songs I believe. After the last song was done, I took the CD out of the player and asked Marc “Can I break this piece of shit over your head?” . Of course he agreed and shards of Mr. Arrico’s CD were laying all over the production rooms floor.

And that’s how the phrase “Break it over Hendral’s Head” was born.

Black Box Revelation – SHIVER OF JOY EP- Merovee Records – September 13, 2011

Music Review by Brad Bugos – brad@fatrobotradio.com

Why do some albums just grab you and make sense when others seem to have the same components or parts but never connect? It’s something I’ve been trying to figure out and write about for over 15 years now. When it does, when that song comes out of the speaker, and you tell yourself “Yeah, I get this, I’m down with this”, it gives you a certain fulfillment that there is a reason you continue to listen to music and write about it.

Black Box Revelation is one of those bands, I enjoy the hell out of their SHIVER OF JOY EP, but why them and not other bands that come across my desk? Let’s assemble the pieces and see if we can’t come up with some coherent recipe of why this is good music and deserves to be heard.

First off, they are essentially a straight up rock band. Good hooks, nice guitar work and some power or heft to their songs. That’s always nice, nothing beats a good solid rock band.

Second, those guitars. I mean, come on, what pack of lame asses wouldn’t enjoy that fuzzy guitar work on “Love Licks” and that laid back jamming on “Sealed with thorns”?

Third, the last song “Sealed with thorns”. If the other five songs didn’t create some kind of stirring in that Hardees incrusted salt flat you call a heart, then this last song will take you on a nice slow trip. This is a really well played out song, some longing, and some slow progression into those guitar solos, oh so god damn beautiful and aching.I like that effect they use on the guitar too. I mean, Fuck, I feel that, it gets me. I understand that feeling.

The last song is over 7 minutes long, with most of it being the distorted guitar, and I never wanted it to end. What a perfect song to go out on after five completely wonderful rock gems. “I think I Like You” is so ready for rock radio that I feel like all I would have to do is show up with a copy of the single at WPGU 107.1 in Champaign/Urbana and they would let me introduce it on the air, and be so glad I shared the song with them that they would name me honorary Mayor of Radio for one day. Hey WPGU, contact me, I’ve got the sash and glad hand ready.

Another thing I would like to point out about this EP, it’s perfect length. It’s a nice introduction to a really good new rock band. Oh yeah, “Always together” sounds like a nice slow building Rolling Stones song from the early 1970′s. Just wanted to point that out.

What’s not to like? I don’t think anyone could come up with anything, and if they did it would be out of spite because the band they are pimping isn’t as good as Black Box Revelation. I like this EP so much and the joy that it brings me when I listen to it, and I listened to it a lot, I’m going to spend my own money on getting the album version. I’m going to buy the two set album package as a matter of fact, because I’m going to give a copy to someone because this music needs to be shared.

I was working for a Country Music Radio Station back in the mid 1990′s when I bumped into quite possibly the biggest asshole in the music industry I have ever met. He had a record out at the time, and he was doing a station to station promotion. He would stop by a bunch of small to medium Country music stations and talk to their morning show, hoping they would play his record. It was kind of quaint, in a Coal Miner’s Daughter sort of way.

I was working overnights at the time, and the end of my shift bumped up against the “Rick and Chick” morning show. I know, it was as horrible as it sounds. Anyway, I usually stuck around to help get things set up, and this Country Music Artist pops in. At first he seemed like a nice guy just trying to get a break. I soon found out that was not the case.

Let me just shorten the story and say this, Jason D. Williams not only slapped me across the face, and poured a cup of scalding coffee on my lap but he got our receptionist pregnant. I think he was drunk and sleep deprived, but that in no way excuses his behavior. I saw Williams on his “Waitin’ on Ice” tour two months later, he never apologized. The scaring on my crotch finally healed. What didn’t heal was my hatred for Jason D. Williams.

Williams.
Now on with the show:

Last year I got into another argument with my girlfriend about Rush, and more specifically Geddy Lee, the lead singer. She thinks he’s the worst singer ever, and that RUSH would sound ten times better with a singer that (and I quote) “Doesn’t sound like a woman who fell down a well, while trying to hold a pee in standing in two feet of rancid water”. Harsh words, I know. I set out to defend RUSH and Geddy Lee, cause I love the bands music and think that there is no way the band would be as good or as RUSH, without Geddy. Also he has a cool name.

So on an episode of the SLTM podcast, I made a list of 25 singers worse than Geddy Lee. I announced the full list on Episode 129. Here is the list for you to comb over and ultimately agree with. I mean, Geddy Lee rules, we all know that and now so does my girlfriend.

TWENTY FIVE WORSE SINGERS THAN GEDDY LEE (In no particular order):
1. Vince Neil- Motley Crue – Over processed and weak. Ten times worse than Geddy.
2. Stephen Percy – Ratt- Same Same. Fifteen times worse than Geddy.
3. Kevin Dubrow- Quiet Riot – Rest his soul. Not a strong singer and kind of a dick.
4. Dexter Holland- Offspring – Like the guy, but that voice ruins some good songs.
5. Tom Keifer – Cinderella- Okay when he sings like a normal person. Screetches a lot.
6. 1985 Chicago Bears- Super Bowl Shuffle? horrible and it berthed another turd.
7. Biz Markie- Love the guys music and I think he was intentionally out of tune.
8. John Mellencamp- Not a strong singer. A little thin, and sometimes no passion.
9. Gwen Stefani – No Doubt- that baby girl voice she does early on is grating.
10. Noel Gallagher- Seems like he’s doing the demo version when he sings.
11. Paul Stanley- Like Kiss. Stanley is a weak singer, but fits great with Kiss.
12. Lou Reed- Not really a singe per se. More a mouth talker. Still bad.
13. Scott Stapp- Creed- Just awful. Plus he sang shitty lyrics. really bad.
14. Chad Kroeger- Nickelback- Another one who is just awful with bad lyrics. No more!
15. Cher- Not a strong singer, you can tell the process the hell out of that voice.
16. Janie Lane- Warrant- Rest his soul. Not a bad singer, just not better than Geddy.
17. Conway Twitty- A pick from my son Tyler. Solid Old Country singer.
18. All three Bee Gees- Maybe they write a nice song, but sound like old ladies.
19. Claudio Sanchez- Coheed&Cambria- Another Tyler pick. I agree hole heartedly.
20. Sonny Bono- He had to let Cher carry the weight on duets he was that weak a singer.
21. David Coverdale- Tony MF choice. I like DC. He can a little over the top though.
22. Dude from Trickster- Another Tony MF choice. Good Choice.
23. Dude from Firehouse- Yep Tony MF again. I agree. overally schmaltzy too.
24.Tiny Tim- I think he was doing it on purpose. Still worse than Geddy
25. Geoff Tate- Queensryche- Tony MF and My dual choice. A bit over blown voice.

There you have it. Agree, disagree or agree 100%, we appreciate you reading it. Leave any comments about who you think should be on the list and I’ll shove it in my girlfriends face and say “SEE YOU’RE STILL WRONG”.

*Point of clarification: we are not saying that all of these singers are totally horrible and should be punched in the voice box. We’re just saying they are worse or a lot worse than Geddy Lee, who we all know RULES!

Here is the second part of the Year End Best of Show. Quickly, I had to redo it because at the 20 minute mark the computer program crashed and burned the original file. This is a bit long, 55 minutes, but I wanted to fit in a lot of music that we found exciting and good this year.

Please Note: The Black Skies are not on this podcast even though ON THE WINGS OF TIME was a great release and one of our favorites in 2011. We wanted to hold off and play a song and review in the new year. It’s a great CD/Digital Download, do yourself a favor and buy a copy. Second, Maidens, the metal band from Wisconsin is not on the show either, and that is only due to the fact that we didn’t want to overplay their 4 Song EP SHALLOWS. It’s a really solid metal album and we enjoy the hell out of it, but didn’t want to overplay them or take away from the fact that you should buy this Cassette/Digital Download.

Thanks for listening in 2011. More New shows coming soon. Lots of new music to share

This did not start out to be a two part special for the year end Best of Show. About Thirty Four minutes in, I realized that there were a lot of bands I wanted to share and talk about that I found amazing in 2011. So I’ve split it up into two parts. Episode 130 here features music from Broadcaster, Run,Forever , Rvins, and Hull. Part Two will post later in the week. So enjoy this first part, and part two when it posts later, these really are some of the best releases of the year.

It’s been a good year podcast wise, well music wise. Podcast wise it’s been a real shitter cause I’m nowhere close to the 2 million listener goal I set myself at the beginning of 2011. About 2 million short.

I’ll pass along my thank you’s on the next episode or part two of this debacle. Thanks for listening.
